Bird Advice and Guides
Choosing the Right Bird Cage
A bird’s cage is its home, and choosing the right one has a direct impact on welfare, health and behaviour. The most common mistake is buying a cage that is too small. Bigger is always better, and the specifications below represent minimums rather than targets.
Size requirements by species
Cage size requirements vary significantly between species, and the right size for a budgie is not appropriate for a cockatiel and certainly not for a parrot.
- Budgies: a minimum of 45cm wide x 45cm deep x 60cm tall for a single bird, with a larger cage essential for a pair; width matters more than height as budgies are active horizontally
- Cockatiels: a minimum of 60cm wide x 45cm deep x 90cm tall; cockatiels are active and need horizontal space to move freely between perches
- Parrots: cage requirements vary very significantly by species; always research your specific parrot species carefully before purchasing, and the cage must allow full wing extension without touching the bars
- Canaries and finches: long, horizontal cages are preferred as these birds naturally fly horizontally between perches rather than climbing vertically
Bar spacing and cage material
Bar spacing and construction material are safety considerations that are easy to overlook but critically important for your bird’s wellbeing.
- Bar spacing must be appropriate to the species: bars that are too wide allow escape or head entrapment, both of which can cause serious injury
- Budgies need bar spacing no wider than approximately 1.2cm; larger parrots need stronger, wider-spaced bars suited to their size and beak strength
- Stainless steel cages are the most durable, hygienic and long-lasting option for everyday use
- Always ensure that cage coatings are free from zinc and lead, as both are toxic to birds and can cause serious illness through contact and chewing

Frequently Asked Questions
A single budgie needs a minimum cage size of 45cm wide x 45cm deep x 60cm tall. Width is more important than height as budgies are most active horizontally. For a pair of budgies a larger cage is essential, and bigger is always better for your bird’s welfare and activity levels.
Parrot cage requirements vary significantly between species. At minimum, the cage must allow the parrot to fully extend its wings without touching the bars in any direction, and bar spacing must be appropriate to prevent escape or injury. Our team can advise on the right cage for your specific parrot species.
