Bird Advice and Guides

Caring for Your Caged Bird

Caged birds are intelligent, sociable animals with specific needs that vary considerably between species. What works well for a budgie is often completely wrong for a parrot, and even canaries and finches have different requirements to each other. Getting the basics right from the start makes an enormous difference to your bird’s health and happiness.

Nutrition and feeding

Species-appropriate feeding is the single most important aspect of caged bird care and one of the areas most commonly misunderstood by new bird owners.

  • Different species have genuinely different nutritional needs: budgie food is not appropriate for a parrot or canary, and using the wrong food can cause long-term nutritional deficiencies
  • Seeds alone are an incomplete diet for most caged birds: they are high in fat and lack essential vitamins and minerals, making pellets an important part of a balanced modern approach
  • Fresh fruit, vegetables and sprouted seeds can supplement the diet, provide variety and add enrichment to mealtimes in a way that seeds alone cannot
  • Fresh, clean water must be available at all times and changed daily to prevent bacterial growth

Environment and enrichment

A well-set-up cage is the foundation of good bird welfare, and the environment inside it matters as much as the food that goes in.

  • The cage must be large enough for your bird to fully extend its wings in every direction and move freely between perches without restriction
  • Perches of different diameters and materials support healthy foot and joint condition over time, reducing the risk of pressure sores and mobility issues
  • Toys and enrichment are essential, not optional: caged birds are highly intelligent and without adequate mental stimulation they can develop stress-related behaviours
  • Position the cage away from draughts, direct sunlight, non-stick cooking fumes and any other airborne hazards, as birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems

Frequently Asked Questions

Budgies need a diet based on budgie-specific seed mix or pellets, supplemented with fresh leafy vegetables, sprouted seeds and occasional fruit. Water must be changed daily. Foods to avoid include avocado, onion, garlic and chocolate, all of which are toxic to budgies.

A single budgie needs a cage at least 45cm wide, 45cm deep and 60cm tall. Budgies are most active horizontally, so width is more important than height. Pairs of budgies need proportionally more space. Bigger is always better for bird welfare.
